Chapter 10

“The city planners built this building to last. Knowing how rugged the coastline was and how violent the weather could be so close to the shore, they used granite for the foundation and specially forged bricks for the exterior walls. It was said no prisoner could escape once incarcerated in the basement.” Molly led the way through the Cape Churn Library, explaining the history of the building, starting in the basement. “Some of the cells have been preserved as they’d been over a hundred years ago. Others have been used to store holiday decorations and other items.” She paused in front of a particular cell.

Josh wore a small video camera attached to his head with a Velcro strap, and he carried another video camera attached to a lightweight tripod, asking questions as they went. “Did anyone die in this prison?”

A chill trickled across her skin, raising gooseflesh. “As a matter of fact, someone did. This cell contained the notorious Daniel Olsen, who had been arrested for the murders of five of Cape Churn’s ladies’ maids. He claimed he didn’t kill them, that the Devil’s Shroud had been responsible.”

“I read about the Devil’s Shroud,” Anita said. “It’s legendary for this area. The stories say the Devil’s Shroud causes ships to run aground on the rocky point, for people to disappear in the fog and for others to do things they normally wouldn’t.”

“As was the case with Olsen?” Reed asked.

“And the failed brakes in Mr. Valdez’s vehicle last night?” Talia queried.

Molly bit down on her tongue to keep from snapping back. Instead, she replied, her voice tight, “Although the fog plays havoc with ships close to shore, I find it to be a convenient excuse for troublemakers.”

Anita laughed. “Touché.”

Molly continued, “The morning of his trial, Daniel Olsen was found hung from the light fixture. The jailers reported it as suicide, that he’d used the sheets on his bunk to tie off.”

“I’d hate to have been the one to find him,” Mel Wilkins whispered. “This place is creepy enough without finding a body hanging from the light fixture.”

“Do you mind if we turn out the lights?” Josh suggested. “I’d like to turn on my infrared camera and see if we pick up any thermographic images in the cells.”

Molly’s gaze shot to Nova. The thought of turning off the lights in as unsettling a place as the old Cape Churn jail was bad enough without a potential killer lurking among the current occupants.

“Oh, yes, please, Ms. McGregor. We always show something different on the infrared camera,” Anita added.

Molly bit her lip and gave in. This was a ghost-hunting tour, after all. “Is there anyone who doesn’t want to be down here when the lights are off?” Molly moved toward the light switch on the wall near the exit.

“I’m out of here.” Mel pushed past her and climbed the stairs to the first floor. “I’ll wait up here.”

“I’ll wait with Mel. I can see the video later.” Preston moved past Molly as well, climbed the steps and closed the door at the top.
